Although the welding technology in Indonesia have been improved recently through the experiences of several shipbuilding projects, the welding quality is still below the level of international average. The rate of weld defect is still quite high. From the view points of safety of ships and crews, seaworthiness, protection of ocean environment and also competitiveness in ship production market, welding quality is one of the imperative requirements imposed on Indonesian shipbuilding industry. This paper discusses the present situation of welding quality in Indonesian shipyards, especially in the medium capacity shipyards, and the effective elements to improve the quality based on the welding inspections carried out for Caraka Jaya semi-container ships.
