A sequential cost minimization method is presented for the inspection planning problem of fatigue deteriorating structures. The method aims to find an optimal inspection strategy so that the total cost expected in the period between the present inspection and the next be minimum. The optimization is repeatedly carried out, at every inspection. Although this sequential cost, minimization is a suboptimization method, the strategies selected by the method are close to the lifetime optimal one in most cases. Further, the optimization is accomplished with realistic computational effort even for a large system. The applicability of the proposed method is examined for a structural member set and a hypothetical structure. And the influence of inevitable uncertainty of the parameter on inspection planning is discussed based on the Bayesian analysis and the sensitivity analysis.
