On ore carrier or bulk carrier, it is better to adopt long cargo holds for higher efficiency of cargo loading/unloading and to provide long cargo hatches for decreasing working time for open/close of hatch covers. Ore carrier in this paper has been designed to meet these requirements. On the design of long hatch covers, we must take care of displacement and vertical defletion of hatch opening caused by bending moment and/or torsional moment of hull girder. Especially, 36kg/mm^2 high-tensile steel has been applied on upper deck so that displacement and vertical deflection of hatch opening caused by bending/torsional moment is bigger than that of conventional mild steel vessel. On the other hand, long hatch cover may have vertical deflection by self-weight and thermal deflection more than short hatch cover. Also we have to consider much about type of sealing packing, type of cleating device, type of open/close device, mutual motion of hatch cover and hatch coaming, and so on. In this paper, we will explain our design conception about long hatch covers and introduce results of experiment of thermal deflection and temperature measurements.
