In analyzing the strength of stiffened plates by large deflection theory, there tend to occur numerical difficulties in direct calculations because of its nonlinear characteristics and it may take a long computing time to analyze by finite element method. This paper presents a simplified method of elastic-plastic analysis of stiffened plates subjected to large deflections taking into account of its physical and geometric nonlinearity. This method is based on the assumptions of the elastic-plastic hinges which are equivalent to elastic-plastic deformation in a member. These plastic deformations are concentrated only to the nodes and elastic beam theory for the part between its elastic-plastic hinges is used. This assumption has great advantage of simplifying the treatment of this problem and the computing time is saved. Futhermore by using the moving coordinate under consideration of contraction of axes, very large deflection analysis is possible. In this part, a stiffened plate between stiffeners is treated as a strip. The relations between the strength of this strip and its deflectional behaviour at various conditions of nodal constraints are analyzed and clarified by numerical computations.
