In this paper, the investigation about the buckling strength of panels in way of transverse members and swash bulkhead is made on the ultra large crude oil carriers. In the analysis of panels against buckling, the theory of large deformation of plates and FEM are employed in the comparison of theoretical results with experimental values of the 400,000 D.W.T. tankers built at our Hitachi Ariake Shipyard. The effect of imperfection on panels such as initial deformation or residual stresses caused by welding are also considered under the condition of biaxial stresses with shearing stress acting on panels. As the conclusion, the authors propose that it may be preferable to adopt the following guide value of safety factors against the buckling of panels, even though the safety factors are deeply concerned with the loading condition, and the defferent portion of structural member. If the author's adopted formula is used, ν(safety factor)≧about 1.4
