The authors presumed, through a model test in a cavitation tunnel, the area on a full scale propeller where cavitation erosion was supposed to occur. Further, to examine micro-nature of erosion, the authors made a model propeller by coating its surface with solder, and thus, conducted an erosion test. As the results, the following conclusions were derived: (1) Through a model test using a solder coated model propeller, it is possible to presume locations on a full scale propeller where cavitation erosion occurs. (2) More the solder includes Pb, longer the incubation period of cavitation erosion. (3) Occurrence of erosion can be controlled by selecting materials used for the coating. (4) Diameter of an erosion pit is about 1mm, and it grows toward the depth direction.
