It is impossible to calculate, by the formula hitherto used, the effective breadth of stiffened plating containing web frames, because the distribution of plane stress is, as the author stated in the paper (1), different in the joint of stiffener and plate. In this paper, he furthermore intends to present a wider formula with due regard to the centroid of stiffener itself, which is caused by the shearing force supposed to occur in the joint when stiffener is separated from plate. He also indicates the above formula in a practical form, transforming, according to his own definition, the equations of equilibrium for the stiffened plating, which was induced in his previous paper. As is shown, the effective breadth of the stiffened plating containing web frames is greatly influenced by the size of the cross section of stiffener, the aspect ratio of plate and its thickness. In case ordinary frame and web frame have the same size, however, the completely equal value is obtained either by the old method or by the author's, in calculating the effective breadth. In actual calculation performed both by the old method and by the author's, the results are as following: (a) The value of the effective breadth calculated by the former is, as compared with that by the latter, smaller in the case of web frame and larger in ordinary frame. (b) Utilizing the above result, the value of maximum bending stress gained by the formmer is, as compared with that by the latter, larger in ordinary frame and smaller by approximately 10% in the case of web frame.
