As the hull has been gigantized, the stiffened plate structure has become a complex one including the web frame and the ordinary frame. When such a complex stiffened plate structure is subjected to transverse loads, the rate of the load distributed on each stiffener being different and the shear lag produced on the plate being also indefinite, the calculation method of H.A. Schade, etc. hitherto in use, in which they seek the effective breadth and decide the size of the stiffener by it, can't get a correct value. In order to establish a new strength calculation of the stiffener in such a case, in this paper the auther conbines the plane stress theory and the bending theory of the plate, and formularizes the basic equation on the strain of stiffened plating in a formula of simultaneous linear equations, by means of which he shows the analysis of stress and strain over the whole of the stiffened plating such as the load distributed on each stiffener, the plane stress, the bending stress, the deflection, and the slope produced on the plate, and the deflection and the bending stress yielded on each stiffener, and so on, when stiffeners of any size are arranged in parallel.
