The southwest islands of Japan that we call Okinawa today were once called Ryukyu. The Ryukyu Kingdom was an independent kingdom from the 15th century to the 19th century, extended to the Amami Islands in modern-day Kagoshima prefecture and the Sakishima Islands near Taiwan, played a central role in the maritime trade networks of medieval Japan, China, Korea and Southeast Asia, and had a unique culture its own.Present investigation has been carried out for the purpose of clarify the characteristics of embroidered textiles which remained in Ryukyu area. In this paper, it is described that two kinds of embroidery techniques of the variation of 'herringborn stitch' and 'surface stitch' were found in the fragments of the embroidered fabrics which belong to the Nakamura family in the northern part of Okinawa Island. For the reason why the name of that two stitches were not found in the techniques of traditional Japanese embroidery, 'Ryukyu chidori nui' (Ryukyuan herring born stitch) and 'hon aya-ori nui' (regular surface twill stitch) is given to each stitch as traditional Ryukyuan embroidery.
