This study is for micro-sociolinguistics, which studies face-to-face social interactions by language data. For this genreof linguistics, style shifting or situational variations in a way of speaking are studied. To analyze such social variations, the researchers identify social factors causing those changes in speaking style. As such social factors, or variables,Social Power and Social Distance have been utilized by the researchers. As for these variables, however, one mightfind the notional diversity from researchers to researchers. For instance, while some schools of sociolinguisticsconsider these two variables to be the two distinct factors, other schools consider Power to be the cause of Distance, where we cannot see these two factors separately. Thus, such confusion has allowed the researchers to display quitea unique variation of language use. Moreover, the notion of social variables is so vague that the researchers haveutilized whatever they can consider to be social attributes. Thus, the whole picture of sociolinguistic studies is chaotic. Therefore, in the present study, the author will discuss (1) some contradictions in the sociolinguistic patterns whichhave been displayed by the celebrated sociolinguists in the past, and (2) their incongruities in the notion of SocialVariables.
