Sinus lift augmentation (sinus lift) is performed in patients with inadequate alveolar bone height for placement of endosseous dental implants. Histopathological examinations have been performed in several studies on sinus lift, but no biomechanical studies were found in a search of the literature. In this report, two types of hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles, a porous type and a dense type, were packed into the frontal sinuses of dogs. Microscopic analysis and measurement of the pressure strength of the bone containing HAP was performed 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Histopathological examination showed new bone growth in the porous type both 6 and 12 months postoperatively. The quantity of bone was greater at 12 months than at 6 months. In the dense type, no new bone was found at all either 6 or 12 months postoperatively. Measurement of pressure strength revealed that the porous type tended to be stronger than the dense type at 6 months, and that the dense type was stronger at 12 months. The strength of bone containing HAP was midway between that of cortical and cancellous bone, suggesting that it withstands the compressive strength after implant installation. The porous type, which showed excellent new bone formation, was more suitable than the dense type as a sinus lift grafting material.
