The ERP before and after light irradiation and the distribution of rhodopsin and its regeneration following light irradiation were observed in the study of SDR. The amplitude of the R_2 of the ERP had started to decrease at 2 months of age. The recovery rate of the amplitude of R_2 after light irradiation began to be reduced at 10 months of age. The peak latency of R_2 tended to shorten as the degeneration progressed. It was not influenced by light irradiation. The amount of rhodopsin in ther region of the outer segment adjacent to the pigment epithelium was almost the same as that in the region of the outer segment adjacent to the inner segment in normal rats. However, in SDR the rhodopsin content and its regeneration following light irradiation in the region of the outer segment adjacent to the pigment epithelium began to decrease at 4 months of age. The rhodopsin content in the region of the outer segment adjacent to the inner segment started to decrease at 6 months of age. Rhodopsin regeneration was reduced at 10 months of age, but the regeneration rate was normal. The ERP was the first observed abnormality with changes in rhodopsin content occurring later.
