The first abnormality that is histologically recognized in the retina of rats with spontaneous retinal dystrophy is vacuolar degeneration of the visual cell layer at 4 months of age. At about 13 months of age the outer and inner segments of the visual cell layer changed to rod debris. The cells of the outer nuclear layer first moved through the outer limiting membrane and then moved towards the pigment epithelium. Occasional cells were observed in the chorionic capillariesm and free cells, which may have had a phagocytic role, were present among the rod debris. At about 14 months of age some cells of the inner nuclear layer had moved along the capillaries in the inner nuclear layer had decreased.
