Trypanosoma gambiense was agglutinated by both tetravalent and divalent (succinylated) concanavalin A. The only difference between these-lectins was that native Con A was 40 times as effective as succinyl Con A. Both native and succinyl Con A competed for the same receptors on the surface of parasites. The electron-dense particles marking bound succinyl Con A were randomly distributed on the cell surface and flagella membrane. These serults suggest that cross-linking or receptor-bridging by tetravalent Con A molecules on the cell surface may not be a stringent requirement for parasite agglutination.
