The morphological distribution of lipid peroxide in the kitten retina was investigated histochemically to ascertain the role of lipid peroxide in the pathogenesis of retinopathy. Thirty-six kittens were used in this study. The kittens were divided into 2 groups. Group A kittens were exposed to a high concentration of oxygen. Untreated group B kittens were used as controls. Group A kittens were placed in an infant incubator, and oxygen administration (70±1%) was started 3 days after birth and continued for 48 h. Both eyes were enucleated on day 5, and frozen sections of the retina were treated with Schiff's reagent at 37℃ for 3 h. The results were as follows: 1. In group A kittens, lipid peroxide was stained with Schiff's reagent in 16 of 26 eyes (61.5%). Lipid peroxide was stained in the temporal ora serrata region in 15 eyes, in the temporal equatorial region in 14 eyes, in the posterior region in 12 eyes, in nasal equatorial region in 4 eyes, and in the nasal ora serrata region in 2 eyes. 2. In group B kittens, lipid peroxide was stained in the nasal and posterior retinas of only one in 10 eyes (10.0%). From these results, it was histochemically confirmed that there were greater amounts of lipid peroxide in the retina of kittens that were supplied with a high concentration of oxygen than in the control.
