We cannot help but feel strong concern about the diminishing fundamental English competency of our new students every year. It has been said that students' disfavor of English could be attributed to their poor performances in the subject. It seems that we should urgently look into the causes of this symptom of our students so that we can take appropriate measures against the subsequent lowering basic knowledge of their English grammar. In this paper I would like to research why the newcomers to the Kushiro College of Technology have developed a distaste for English and ended in such insufficient knowledge of English basics after their three-year middle school education, based on the results of an achievement test and a survey on their attitudes toward the subject that I conducted with the new entrants of 2009. And in the end I would also like to put forth a proposal on what we could do from now so as to improve the current state of the students' grammar comprehension.
