The interview of a pre-second grade Eiken test requires candidates to describe what people in a given picture card are doing. The primary aim of this task is to check on the interviewees for their ability to use action verbs accurately in present progressive form. Of course picture cards differ every time of the Eiken test, but there are surely movements of high frequency in use. One such motion is `get on/in' (some vehicle). Most students adopt `getting on a car/a taxi' to describe that motion. However, their choice of the preposition, strictly speaking, is not quite right although `get on' is acknowledged as an acceptable answer since the verbal phrase `get on' is in the list of new words that first year high school students are supposed to learn. Prepositions have many different nuances intrinsic to them, which could sometimes affect the whole meaning of a sentence. In this paper I would like to verify the subtle difference in the meaning between `get on' and `get in', and then look into the various meanings and usages that each of these two prepositions has in itself.
