Anthropological studies involve the researchers' field experiences. Though the influence may be indirect, such experiences constitute the bases of anthropological knowledge. In spite of the fact that experience is a key concept in the discipline, until comparatively recently it had been neither discussed nor examined closely in anthropological literature. However, since the 1990's, there have been a growing number of anthropological publications of diverse studies that pay special attention to the concept as well as studies that attempt to return to experience as a methodology. They include the phenomenological approach and writings that discuss anthropological knowledge from an epistemological viewpoint-studies in such areas as religion, medicine, embodiment, and senses. Along with this, there have been some critical examinations of the concept of experience from anthropological perspectives, and attempts to precisely formulate the concept. This paper investigates why such interest grew in anthropology, what kind of background it sprang from, what are at issue, and by tracing the genealogy of anthropological return to experience, it attempts to situate the trend within a larger context that includes philosophical thought.
