A fundamental study on the heat and mass transfer characteristics of an engine room fire was carried out by both experiments and numerical simulation. Firstly, an oil burning experiment in a box-type compartment, which is a simplified engine room fire model, was conducted under limited ventilation conditions to investigate the smoke production and movement for such type of engine room fires. From the experiment, several types of quantitative relationships between the oil burning rate and the smoke generating rate were obtained. Then to investigate smoke moment from the engine room fire, experiments and three-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out using an engine room model. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons are made between the experiments and the computation.
