A Detailed Analysis of the Theory of Thin Shells and Some Particular Applications

This paper deals with the theory and applications of the finite deformations of thin shell structures, defined in a system of monoclinically convected coordinate axes. A set of general governing equations are developed for this purpose through the tensor geometrical approach. A detailed analytical and numerical evaluation of these equations lead to a broader understanding of the shallow as well as deep shell deformation processes under a constant pressure loading. It is noteworthy that many of the existing formulations are generally lacking in their ability to take full account of the differential influence of inplane deflections and the double curvature effects (Form resistance), especially in the cases of deep shells. The present formulation takes care of a much wider band of terms in the general governing equations than many of the other formulations and still, their comparative numerical simplicity promise the scope for a more detailed linear as well as nonlinear investigation and make them suitable for an easier adaption in the numerical structural analysis of the problem. Some practical examples are numerically solved and the results are presented. Comparative evaluations are made and satisfactory validation is obtained in the cases of shallow shells, with some numerical results obtained through other methods. Some special shapes of deep shells are attempted as particular examples and the results are presented.
