Fatigue damage often occurs in corner boxing welded joints because of stress concentration and residual stress. The hot spot stress approach is applicable to stress concentration. However, the number of suitable methods for estimating residual stress in welded joints is limited. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the residual stress in corner boxing joints. The method of estimating residual stresses based on the inherent stress technique is presented. Residual stress measurements are performed on two types of longitudinal fillet welded joints. Experimental results are compared with calculated results, and the correctness of the estimation method is confirmed. Parametric studies on residual stress are carried out using this method, and the effects of section dimensions of face plate, heat input, yield strength and welding length are shown.
