It has been widely known that heat treatment is required to bend orthodontic Ni-Ti alloy wires. Recently, direct electric resistance heat treatment equipments used to bend the Ni-Ti wire in orthodontic clinics. In this study, twenty-three commercial orthodontic Ni-Ti wires were examined for two factors: 1. Necessary heat treatment time for forming and 2. Changing of mechanical properties by heat treatment wires. The latter was examined using the three points bending test. As a result, we found that heat treatment time required for the formation into required shapes for all samples were 3〜5 seconds. Furthermore, the equipment utilizing electric resistance of the various Ni-Ti alloy wires had an effect on load in the super-elastic regions, stress hysteresis, and stiffness.
