Although SO_2 is a well known and generally accepted cause of air pollution, little has been reported on histopathological changes of the lung exposed to the lower level ofthegas. This study was designed to evaluate the pure effect of the gas comparing pulmonary histopathology of the germ free young guinea pigs with that of the conventional ones. Comparison was made also by counting bacteria in the lung of the conventional SO_2-exposed animals and controls. Forty ppm SO_2 was exposed continuously for 2 to 22 days to the animals which were reared in the vinyl isolator. The results were as follows; The lung of the SO_2-exposed animals, both from the germ free and the conventional, showed a kind of interstitial inflammation with considerable thickening of the alveolar walls, consisted mainly of infiltration and/or proliferation of large mononucleal cells, fibroblasts, lymphocytes and swollen alveolar epithelial cells. This lesion exhibited a tendency to become marked with the longer exposure. The changes seemed to be caused through both the bronchogenic route and small blood vessels. This lesion was common in both groups, however the most interesting was a complication of bronchopneumonia observed in the SO_2-exposed conventional animals but not in the germ free ones. This finding may be closely related to the bacterial infection, because of significant difference in counts of bacteria between SO_2-exposed conventional ones and none-exposed controls. Therefore, it could be considered that increase in the incidence of chronic respiratory diseases in the area of air pollution resulted from the comlication of SO_2-induced injury and bacterial infection.
