It is wellknown that influenza virus inoculated in to the chorioallantoic cavity of all developing egg invariably appears in the ammniotic cavity. When the virus (PR-8) in the ammniotic fluid was passaged serially through the ammniotic cavity, several facts that had never been reported before have been observed. 1. A variant which causes haemorrhagic lesions and death of the embryo, was discovered. 2. Although the HA-titer was abnormally high, it seemed to be not due to the incomplete growth of the virus, because of the fact that the ratio of EID-titer to HA-titer was 5. 3. Antigenically the variant and the original strain did not show any difference. 4. With respect to the so-called O-D phase, the variant and the original strain were also identical. 5. Multiplication of the variant and the original strain will be equally suported by the ammniotic cells.
