In order to set a standard for the term of culture of Ascaris eggs to determine if they are dead of alive, experiments were carried out, in which the eggs of Ascaris suilla were treated with mustard oil, carbon disulfide or Neo-jikuron and cultured on hole glass at 29℃. Death was determined based on the percentage of embryonated eggs found in culture. No eggs treated with mustard oil developed into embryonated eggs after the 14th day. percentages of the eggs treated with carbon disulfide that developed into embryonated eggs at different times were : 83.6% .on the 14th day ; 96.2% on the 21st day ; 96.2% on the 21st day ; 98.7% on the 28th day : and 99.6% on the 35th day. One egg developed into an embryonated egg between the 57th and 65th days. Corresponding figures for the eggs treated with Neo-jikuron were : 80.0% on the 14th day ; 69.3% on the 21st day ; and 99.8% on the 28th day. One egg developed into an embryonated egg after the 29th day. When a delay in growth is taken into consideration, culture should be continued for at least 4 weeks, or 8 weeks if stricter standards are required. Long-term culture often results in granulation degeneration of embryonated eggs. So the conclusion is that 4 weeks should be accepted as the proper term for culture. Degenerated eggs were divided into three groups according to form and stage of degeneration : (1) highly degenerated, (2) moderately degenerated and (3) slightly degenerated. Group 3 consists of eggs which may instantly be determined as dead. Group 2 contains eggs some of which may develop but not become embryonated. Group 3 includes eggs some of which may develop into embryonated eggs.
