An attempt was made to add to the basic knowledge on sialograms of the submaxillary gland by studying sialograms and comparing the results with histopathologic findings made on resected specimens of the gland in various diseases of the submaxillary gland and its adjoining regions. The cases under study had been seen in our clinic during the period from July, 1950 to June, 1959. Two groups of patients were used as controls. One group consisting of 11 cases of maxillary carcinoma and other Oto-rhinopharyngolaryngeal marignant tumours, in which sialograms were not done, had normal gland tissue. The other group consisted of 10 cases in which both sialographic and histologic studies were carried out. Each of the two groups were further subdivided into two gaoups : cases receiving irradiation treatment and no irradiation treatment. Then, the effects of injection of 40 % moljodol and irradiation with X-rays and others on sialograms and histologic picture of the gland and changes in them were studied and compared from group to group. Further, sialographic and histologic findings were compared in 74 cases of various diseases of the submaxillary gland and its adjoining regions. The results have shown that sialograms may clearly reflect histopathologic changes, and that it will be of value as a method of diagnosis, forecasting the prognosis and selection of treatment for diseases of the submaxillary gland and its adjoining regions.
