For the purpose of investigating the occurrence of the Sudan 1C positive A-type and B-type cells (prof. Misonou) in a cancer developing in the cervix uteri and its bearing on curability of cancer, of carrying out repeat tests for CPL classification of uterine cancers (prof. Imai), and of examining the relation of the occurrence of the Sudan III positive cells to CPL classification, 94 hysterectomized patients with carcinoma colli uteril and 11 hysterectomized patients with non-cancerous diseases, which served as controls, were studied histologically. 1. The rate of occurrence of the. A-type cells paralleled that of the B-type cells in the central part of a tumor and in the stroma in the periphery of a tumor. The rate of occurrence of the A-type cells seemed to have no bearing on prognosis. So far as the patients with cancerous growths infiltrating deep into the uterus were concerned, the rate of occurrence of the B-type cells seemed to have a bearing on curability of cancer. When there was a high rate of development of B-type cells at the extremity of a tumor, patients generally had better chances of cure. It was difficult, however, to prognosticate with any certainty solely on the basis of this observation. 2. Repeat tests for CPL classification carried out in 94 patient under study showed that there were 50 L-type patients (53.2%), 10 P-type patients (10.6%) and 34 C-type patients (36.2%). This shows that CPL classification is an important guide to prognosis. 3. There was no relation between the occurrence of the Sudan in positive A-type cells and CPL classification. There was a significant relation between the occurrence of the Sudan III positive B-type cells and CPL classification: their rate of occurrence was high in the C-type and low in both the P- and L-types. This relation was observed most markedly when the development of the B-type cells at the extremity of a tumor was investigated. The results of a series of studies described above have led the author to conclude: that no work on malignancy of cancer is not complete if the part played by the stroma is neglected; that a theory propounded by prof. Fromme and prof. Imai to the effect that the stroma plays an important part in checking the spread of cancer cells is of significance; and that the Sudan III positive A-type cells, which make up the parenchyma of a tumor and which have a tendency to degeneration and necrosis, are the cells characteristic of cancer, while the B-type cells, which may be subdivided morphologically into larger and smaller cells, are presumed to be a kind of histogenous mononuclear wander cells, concerned in cleaning up the area involved an anticancerous reaction of the stroma in the broad sense of words.
