Statistical survey was made of 106 patients with schizophrenia under 15 years of age who were selected from among the inpatients and outpatients seen in our clinic during the period from January, 1938 to July, 1959. It is the purpose of this paper to present the characteristic features of schizophrenia in childhood investigated by means of the conditions of patients. The male/female ratio of the patients under study was 4:3, with males predominating. Schizophrenia seldom attacked children under 11 years of age, and the youngest children ever developing it were 4 years old. The majority of the patients under study had been schizoid in character before the onset of the disease. A study on the condition of the patients, with special emphasis on incipient signs and symptoms, showed that they could be classified into the following three types according to differences in the manner in which the disease attacked them: progressive, cyclic and prodormal. The patients with progressive type of schizophrenia were most numerous. Again, the patients under study were divided into seven types according to differences in incipient conditions. Many of them presented a picture of catatonia at the early stages. There were no fundamental differences in the progress of the disease between children and grownups.
