A morphopathological study of experimental pneumonitis induced in sensitized rabbits following intravenous injection combined without (Group 1) or with (Group 2) intratracheal administration of anti-rabbit-lung duck serum is presented. In the Group 1 (8 experimental animals) 6 rabbits demonstrated diffuse or focal pneumonitis of various grades characterized by edematous swelling and following sclerosis of the alveolar wall, transformation of the alveolar capillaries and intercapillary connective tissues into enmeshed structure and following fibrosis, serofibrinous exudation into alveolar lumina, macrophagocytic reaction, formation of epithelial giant cells, fibrinoid thrombosis and intraalveolar bud-like projection, phlebitis, etc. In the Group 2 (7 rabbits) nonpurulent bronchogenic pneumonitis characterized by desquamation or basophilic swelling and proliferation of bronchial epithelia, and formation of submucous granulation tissue accompanied with leukocytic, histiocytic or lymphocytic infiltration as well as diffuse or focal pneumonitis as described above was induced in 6 animals. Among these animals glomerulonephritis developed only in a few cases, and carditis of the rheumatic type was not encountered. From the experimental results here obtained it is suggestive that pneumonitis may occur either as part of systemic tissue reaction or as a definite disease entity. The results may offer a fundamental data in discussing the problem of formal and causal genesis of human pneumonitis.
