Survey was made on 75 farmers, living in some agricultural communities of Yokaichiba area, Chiba Prefecture, who, having had dermatitis by Hookworm larvae before, were positive for hookworm eggs, with cultures of their stools by Kawara (tile) method producing larvae of established identity. Necator americanus was predominantly prevalent in the area, with 63 of the 75 farmers being carriers of its eggs, 2 carriers of the eggs of Ancylostome duodenale and 10 carriers of those of the two species. The following observations were made on various factors contributing to development of dermatitis by Hookworm larvae. 1. As to the places of farming, it was shown that nearly all the farmers contracted dermatitis by Hookworm larvae in the fields. 2. Farmers developed above dermatitis most often during a period from May through September. June and July produced the largest numbers of patients. 3. As to the kinds of crops grown in the fields where farmers contracted dermatitis, it was shown that the fields for radishes and green vegetables produced the largest numbers of patients, followed by those for egg-plants and cucumbers. 4. As to the types of work, it was shown that weeding provided the greatest opportunities for farmers to contract dermatitis, followed by harvesting and cultivating in that order. 5. As to the types of soil of the fields, it was shown that 27 of the 75 farmers contracted dermatitis in the fields of sandy soil, 13 of clay loam, 9 of half sandy and half clay loam, and the rest of miscellaneous soil. 6. In most instances farmers contracted dermatitis when they were working bare-foot and bare-handed in the fields where soil was moist and subterranean temperature high; in some instances, in the fields where soil was wet after rain or with morning dew. 7. The regions of the body most affected by ancylostome dermatitis were the sole and between the toes of feet, and between the fingers of hands, followed by the palm. 8. All the farmers with dermatitis complained of itch, and red patches are cutaneous lesions most often seen to appear, followed by vesicles, pustules, sores and pink spots in the indicated order.
