Bodily developments of the boys and girls of the rural and urban communities in Japan have been statistically compared, and the growths of both normal children and sick children with normally developed constituion have been studied by percentile method. (1) Comparison of the growth curve of children in the urban community with that of children in the rural community showed that the children in the urban community are superior to the children in the rural community in height, sitting height and weight. The growth curves of children of the two different communities showed more or less similar values in circumference of the chest. It will be concluded from this observation that the children of the rural community are shorter in height, heavier in weight and larger in circumference of the chest than their counterparts in the urban community. (2) The growth of children in the urban community has shown a marked improvement in the past years; there has been little improvement in the constitution of the children in the rural community. (3) Studies of the children of Japan have revealed that girls excel boys in height at 9-11.5 years of age, in weight at 8-12.5 years of age and in sitting height at 9-11 years of age, while boys excel girls in height at 12-15 years of age, in weight at 13.5-16 years of age and in sitting height at 13.5-16 years of age. The periods when the growths of boys catch up with those of girls occur one year and a half earlier in the urban community than in the rural community. (4) It would seem that the differences in the rate of growth of children between the urban and the rural communities are attributable to natural as well as social environment. (5) In accordance with the percentile table of the children of Japan, which was prepared by the author, the growths of normal children as well as sick children with abnormal constitution were studied. In normal children, the percentiles representing the measurements of the body, which were between the range 1-99, were well balanced. In sick children with abnormal constitution, however, they deviated, either totally or partially, from the range of percentiles 1-99, and the relation between them was found to be specific to each disease. (6) Studies of children's growths by percentile method will, if carried out every year, be instrumental in the early discovery and diagnosis of abnormal bodily development. The author has developed and desribed a method for easily locating the percentile positions of any Japanese children on the percentile table of the children of Japan on the basis of their measurements.
