The author has carried out thyroid function tests, as well as clinical examinations, in infants and children suffering from hypothyroidism not attended with the development of goiter. The circumstances involved in the onset of the disease (clinical signs, family history, the age at which the disease first developed, etc.) have also been investigated. The findings of the clinical examinations, as well as of the investigations of the circumstances involved in the onset of the disease, agreed with what had hitherto been described in various reports. The results of the thyroid function tests have revealed that the patients examined show lower level of serum protein-bound iodine, normal I^<131> urinary excretion rate and lower thyroid uptake of I^<131> as compared with normal children. This would be taken to mean that hypothyroidism not attended with goiter is characterized by low protein-bound I^<131> and low thyroid uptake of I^<131>. The following three methods of test would be of diagnostic value in cases suspected of hyperthyroidism not attended with goiter: (1) radiographic examinations of the center of epiphysial ossification in the wrist; (2) estimation of serum protein-bound iodine level ; and (3) estimation of the thyroid uptake of I^<131>.
