Food poisoning caused by the Proteus group or a toxin it forms has been studied by many investigators. It has been proved by Jordan et al. by means of animal experiments that the Proteus group produces a substance similar to the enterotoxin producedby the staphylococcus. However, it has not been evidenced yet whether it is pathogenic for men. With the object of conducting a further study on this subject, the author per formed experiments in kittens on whether a toxin similar to enterotoxin is formed by either one of the 27 strains of Proteus group separated from acute gastroenteritis patients and 2 strains of P. morganii donated from other investigator, As the heated filtrates of 3 strains proved to be capable of causing vomiting and diarrhea, a thorough investigation of the filtrate of the culture of 1 strain was conducted from the immunological and biochemical viewpoint. The following are the results of the investigation: 1) Of the 29 strains of Proteus group used in the experiments, 2 strains of P. vulgaris and 1 strain of, P. morganii formed a toxin similar to enterotoxin. 2) The filtrate which had caused poisoning similar to enterotoxin poisoning in animal experiments was capable of causing marked symptoms of gastroenteritis in men when it was mixed with milk and fed to them. This proves that a certain strain of the Proteus group, like the staphylococcus, would produce food poisoning. 3) It was evidenced by precipitation reactions that the heated filtrates of toxic 3 strains contained common antigen substance, but the toxin formed by the Proteus group and the enterotoxin produced by the staphylococcus had different antigenic structure. 4) An experiment on the extraction of toxin performed with the aid of ion exchange resins revealed that the toxin originated in the saccharide protein fraction which was biochemically homologous with that of the staphylococcus.5) When the extract was divided into protein and nonprotein fractions by the Sevag's method, each single fraction proved to have lost toxicity but when they were reunited in a compound they became toxic again. From this it will be seen that, for the extract to be toxic, it is necessary that both the protein and saccharide fractions exist as a compound.
