The Virulence for guinea pigs and the catalase activity of 14 isoniazid resistant strains isolated from the sputa of 9 pulmonary tuberculous patients were examined, in order to determine whether the maintainance of isoniazid resistance in vivo was connected with them. In 1 patient the revertion of isoniazid resistance occured during isoniazid therapy, in 2 the revertion of isoniazid resistance occured after cessation of therapy, in 4 isoniazid resistance was maintained for a long time after cessation of therapy, in remaining 2 isoniazid resistance was maintained during a long-term isoniazid therapy. Fora the examination of catalase activity, 30 % H_2O_2 solution was employed. Guinea pigs subcutaneously infected in each group were sacrificed in 1 month and 2 months after the infection or only in 2 months after : Macroscopic observation and the resistance determination of tubercle bacilli to isoniazid, streptomycin and PAS were performed, the catalase activity of tubercle bacilli isolated on the medium containing 10γ/cc of isoniazid was also tested. The virulence of isoniazid susceptible and resistant tubercle bacilli, isolated from 2 of 9 patients was compared. The catalase activity of tubercle bacilli was examined, which were isolated from 17 pulmonary tuberculous patients more than twice at the different stages of the disease. The results were as follows: (1) The catalase activity and the resistance to isoniazid, streptomycin and PAS of tubercle bacilli isolated from guinea pigs were the same as those of the strains used for inoculation. (2) The virulence for guinea pigs of isoniazid resistant tubercle bacilli was attenuated in various degrees. (3) The tuberculous lesions in the infected guinea pigs were not observed to be regressive. (4) The catalase activity of isoniazid resistant tubercle bacilli seemed to be moderately connected with the virulence for guinea pigs. (5) All strains susceptible to isoniazid proved to be catalase positive, most strains resistant to isoniazid proved to be negative. (6) But, the maintaince of isoniazid resistance in vivo seemed not to be closely connected with the virulence for guinea pigs or the catalase activity of the isoniazid resistant tubercle bacilli.
