• Many speakers of British English have in recent years come to articulate the vowel ［æ］in a more open position than they used to. The vowel ［ʌ］ also has gradually changed its back vowel quality to a more central one. These are regarded as an outstanding change in British pronunciation that is carrying British English further away from American English.These changes have, on the other hand, made the difference between ［æ］ and ［ʌ］smaller, and have made it hard for foreign learners to hear the difference of the two vowels.In this paper some previous studies are shown to be misleading or insufficient to account for ［æ］ and ［ʌ］ in contemporary British pronunciation, and several new points of view are proposed that would be more helpful for Japanese students to be well aware of the distinctions between the two vowels.
