In this article a cognitive perspective of the use of English deictic demonstratives this and that is proposed. Some previous related studies are shown to be insufficient to account for this/that cases to which the notion of near/distant is inapplicable, and a new framework is proposed. It is argued that the size of the referent in the speaker's field of vision influences the choice between this and that in their deictic usage.
