The 1^<st> edition of "Cheob-hai-sin-eo" was edited by Koreans and published in 1676, as a Japanese language textbook. After publication, this textbook was used for many years to train Japanese language interpreters in Korea. The purpose of my research is to clarify the phonology of a Japanese dialect at that time through examination of Hiragana and Hangeul in the textbook. This paper focuses on Choon (long vowels) with the major findings as follows. In the Japanese dialect on which the textbook is based, it seems that Choon were not yet formed but were in the process of the change; /eu/, /au/, /ou/ were pronounced [ou]; /iu/ pronounced [iu]; /ei/ pronounced [ei]; and /oo/ pronounced [ou]. Only the adjective base /oo/ in "ooi" (many) might have been pronounced [oo] or [uouo]. There were however a few cases of Choon that I found in the textbook. These are as follows. 1. If the last vowel of the adjective base was followed by the inflectional affix of the same sound, these 2 vowels became Choon. e.g. "ureshii" (happy) → [ure∫i:] "yasuu" (easily) → [yasu:] 2. In the series of vowels /oou/ such as the ones in "oou" (many), the last 2 vowels became Choon. e.g. [oo:]. There seems to have been some words which had already become Choon. e.g. "hayou" (quickly) → [hayo:], "iu" (to say) → [yu:], "kotogotosiu" (exaggeratedly) → [kotogoto∫u:]. The instances of Choon were often represented in 1 mora in the 1^<st> edition of "Cheob-hai-sin-eo", but they gradually came to be represented in 2 morae through 2 revisions. The author of the 1^<st> edition seems to have represented the word sounds in a phonetic way, while the authors of the 2^<nd> and 3^<rd> editions were more faithful to the Japanese phonology in the way they represented the word sounds.
