The 1st edition of "Cheob-hai-sin-eo" was edited by Koreans and published in 1676, as a Japanese language textbook. After publication, this textbook was used for many years to train Japanese language interpreters in Korea. The purpose of my research is to clarify the phonology of a Japanese dialect through examination of the way the Japanese syllables were transcribed into Hangeul (Korean writing) in the textbook. This paper focused on Yotsugana ( /zi/, / dzi/, /zu/, /dzu/) with the major findings as follows: Both of /zi/ and /dzi/ in the initial position seemed to have been pronounced as affricates and lost the distinction between each other. However /zu/ might have been distinguished from /dzu/ because /zu/ was pronounced in high tension, /zu/ still might have been pronounced as a fricative. The Yotsugana /zi/ in the medial position seemed to have been distinguished from /dzi/, because /zi/ was rarely pronounced with an on-glide nasal, while /dzi/ was pronounced with an on-glide nasal in most cases. Pre-nasalization seemed to have occurred before /zu/ and /dzu/, but these two phonemes were not confused, because /zu/ was pronounced in high tension, /zu/ might have been pronounced as a fricative even though it was preceded by /N/ or an on-glide nasal. I argue that the transcriptions representing Yotsugana in this textbook reflect the fact that the Yotsugana in the Japanese dialect on which this text book is based, were beginning to be confused in initial positions but they were still distinguished quite well in medial positions.
