Seiyo Jijo was written and published from 1866 to 1870, before and after the Restoration, by FUKUZAWA Yukichi who was one of the foremost advocates of modernization in Meiji Japan. Although the book is disregarded in its contents today, it was the most current guide to the West and influential to the large number of the readers at that time. Fukuzawa was very enthusiastic for enlighting Japanese people. In order to give some knowledge about western civilization to Japanese people, he concentrated on simplifying his own style of writings so that his works would be read by as wide a public as possible. His first work written in this style was Seiyo Jijo. My plan is to analyse his style and his language of Seiyo Jijo, but in this paper, I tried to deal only with his style as follows; 1. Foreword 2. The general tendency of the style and the writing in early Meiji period 3. Fukuzawa's concentrations on the simplification of the writing 4. About three styles of Fukuzawa's 5. The style of Seiyo Jijo 6. The structure of Seiyo Jijo 7. The characteristics of the expressions of Seiyo Jijo
