After A Vindication of the Rights of Woman was published in 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft was called a 'hyena in petticoats' by Horace Walpole with his memorable phrase. And Hannah More criticized it as having something so ridiculous and not so interesting at all in the very title that she had no intention of reading it. Wollstonecraft attacked in her book severely an idea in Chapter V of Emile or on Education, by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, subordinating woman to man in the order of nature, which was decisively believed at that time. She claimed that rights of woman should bear discussion and explanation by reasoning, not according to prescription, just like rights of man. But in this paper, close examination and consideration of Emile will find an image of Mary Wollstonecraft, not being a radical reformer, but being an imaginative and domestic woman, contrary to criticism, which went in the wrong direction, of Horace Walpole and Hannah More.
