Tsvetaeva's Phaedra can be clearly characterized through a comparison with the other classical plays on the same subject by Euripides, Seneca and Racine. Tsvetaeva introduces her favorite schema of contrastive division of main characters into this mythological tragedy. Hippolytus and Theseus function as typical tragic characters, who not only are manipulated by their fates but also struggle with them. Contrastingly, Phaedra deviates from her predestined route without a struggle. In this way, Tsvetaeva's Phaedra reduces the possibility of staging scenes involving conflict between characters, or between characters and their fates.
