The present study is an attempt to detect by electron microscopy the minute structures of the skeletons of the scleractinians. For that purpose, the following species have been used; Funbia sp. Favites pentagona (EsPER), Poccipora sp., Dendrophyllia japonica and simple coral belonging to Caryophylliidae (fossil). The materials were embedded in epoxy resin, and polished in various orientations. Replicas by double stage method were prepared, before and after etching mainly by tetrasodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate, and supplementaryby hydrochloric and acetic acids, ammonium chloride and hydrogen peroxide, from polished surfaces of fragments orientated transverselly, longitudinally and tangentially to the longer axis of the rod of aragonite, and also from outer surfaces of septa. Positive carbon replicas were shadow-cast with chromiume. All specimens were prepared and photographed by the auther. The electoron microscope employed was JEM-5 set in Tokyo University of Education. The present results show that the minute structures of the skeletons of scleractinians consist of mineral rods (0.5-1μ in diameter) and certain substances which regist erosion by the chelating agent (EDTA-4 Na). It is presumed that the former correspond to the rods of aragonite observed under polarizer microscope. It was found that the latter surrounding rods of aragonite were characteristic "fibers" under high magnification, which are 0.01-0.04μ in diameter. Most of them can be recognized as pseudo-replica. They completely disapear after etching with dilute acid and hydrogen peroxide for a few or several minutes, while regist erosion with EDTA-4 Na. The characteristic shape of these "fibers" seems to be similar to the form of reticular fiber. It may be concluded that these characteristic "fibers" in the skeletons are organic fibers.
