HOUSKA and WARREN'S Fourier-analysis method has been applied to an interpretation of basal reflections, for four samples of sericite, which represent the various degrees of line broadening each other. Referring to the crystallinity of muscovite as standard, it has been confirmed that the line broadenings of three samples are due to both particle size and crystal distortion effects and the line broadening of the other is only due to particle size effect. Considering the correlation of the degrees of distortion with chemical data, distortion effect may be related to the amount of aluminium substituting silicon in tetrahedral coordination.
