Humic substances are the principal organic components of soils in which they interact with metal ions, metal oxides, metal hydroxides, and clay minerals to form associations of widely differing physical, chemical and biologocal stabilities. The chemistry of humic substances has been under continuous investigation for almost 200 years. In spite of the availability of abundant field and experimental data in the literature, soil scientists as yet have not been able to establish a clear concept which elucidates the behaviour of humic substances in the soil regime. This is due to the complexity of the chemical structure of these substances as well as the complexity of soil system. The impact of humic substances on soil is profound. Without better understanding of humic substances, there is no better management for soil as sustainable land resources. Based largely on the author's callaborative work with Morris Schnitzer for the past 30 years, an attempt was made to draw the attention of earth scientists in various fields to this fascinating nature of humic substances.
