This paper aims to consider nursing and its function in Charles Dickens's novel, Bleak House (1852-53), from the viewpoints of gender and class. Three types of nursing can be observed. First, Esther's nursing is a typical example of nuirsing as a female household "duty." Esther has lost her "beauty" by nursing her maidservant, Charley, and her disfiguration marks a turningh point both in her own life and in the narrative itself. Second, Ada's nursing results in failure, for her ;patient, Richard Carstone, lacks the will to recover, and is always depending on his great expectations. Compared with these examples, Allan's nursing as a doctor shows middle-class paternal authority and heroism. In conclusion, by being a nurse and a doctor, Esther and Allan become not only an ideal couple, but also literally the heroine/hero of the novel. In this respect, nursing in Bleak House functions as a crucial aspect of the narrative.
