The purpose of this essay is twofold - firstly, to explore the critical background of "hybridity" in postcolonial discourse and its application to the works of Rudyard Kipling, especially in Kim (1901) and "Lispeth" in Plain Tales from the Hills (1888), and secondly, to consider the significance of the encounter of two protagonists, Kim and Lispeth, in the latter part of Kim. Kim and Lispeth are characterized as cultural "hybrids" influenced by both the British Empire and India in terms of their name, language, and education. Their hybridity, however, is regarded as negative because it threatens to subvert the concept of binary opposition between England as "the colonizer" and India as "the colonized." Consequently, it is obvious that a new "hybrid" offspring is never to be born from the relationship between Kim and Lispeth. Instead, Kipling describes the scene of their encounter because he believes that cultural hybridity can play a crucial role in resolving the political and cultural conflict between two nations.
