Today the establishment of recreation thought recognized as a indisputable fact in history. From this point of view, a question (a historical approach) is suggested ; What is a parent (traditional) idea of recreation thought? What kind of backgrounds in social, cultural and historical condition effect this idea? The word "recreation idea" forms a partial system of thought explaining the value of recreation. and this word is accepted as a type of idea, which is a purified conception from many historical phenomenons, in this treatise. It goes without saying that the liberal idea of recreation, a purified traditional conception, is effected with a cultural background of that time. The common character consisting in this Parent idea in relation to its background, is got into shape as follow ; First, recreation is regarded as a individual interests. Second, it is not a primary fact of life but a substitution for a result of work. Third, under the influence of individual success, the sense of beauty is inevitable. For researching into this character in (a liberal idea of recreation), it is necessary to study essays of the representative persons in that time. Consequently, B. Frankline (1706-1790) and R. Emerson (1803-1882) are chosen for this purpose. B. Frankline showed its value with relation to the belief in life as self-improvement. R. Emerson showed it with relation to the individuality based on self-reliance. And aesthetic judgement means simllier to humanity in this idea. Recreation closely relate to leisure which is opposed to work. Being from the work, it takes place to repair (or to modify) the cut-and-dried life. Recration looks like a right of rich men. The type of recreation idea, which is concreted by Frankline and Emerson, is a representative (adaptable) one of that time. It have a historical meaning as a type of parent idea which formulates the system of recreation thought, today.
