A problem of alienation, reflecting social conditions of today, have a great influence on recreation activities. This treatise is an approach to a historical methodology, and is intended to consider a relation of physical education between recreation (Physical recaeation) and human alienation. This historical study aims to gain a guiding principle for the current recreation, especially poorness or confusion of recreation consciousness. For this purpose, it is necessary to define the essential meaning of recreation. Recreation, the term of which comes from RATIN 'RECREATIO', means 'RE-CREATION' from the first. In a word, recreation is a renewal or preparation for the continuence of routine and necessary work. And taking another step, it is a way of life by the creative act. According to this meaning, play does not always mean recreation. It is highly necessary, to take a new look at the history of recreation thought ; how and why has recreation been recognized in the process of history? Therefore, following points are indicated ; first, to inquire into the motive (alienated consciousness), which result from a urgent request of civilization and increase a necessity of recreation. What we must give attention is not only a recreation thought which is involved beforehand in a democratic mode of life, but also an advocacy of recreation which arise from the alinated conciousness. Second, to study the history of recreation thought in relation to a stereotyped civilization. It is evident that recreation is corresponded to civilization and is a civilization itself, and it is important to understand 'the adaptible pattern of recreation thought' in a characteristic of stereotyped civilization.
