Pica is the qualitative problem of eating. Pica is the compulsive eating of nonnutritive substances and can have serious medical implications. Pica is a ubiquitous phenomenon, shows heightened prevalence in certain high-risk populations, i. e. infants, pregnant women, the mentally retarded, special ethnic groups and psychiatric patients. As for the resident at the entering facilities which show the problem of the pica, the intellectual delay is important. The authors even suggest that pica might be considered as a good indicator of the institution's care quality, and the author briefly summarizes the medical history of the pica concept and the present state of knowledge concerning aetiology and pathogenesis.
