To meet a requirement for a low weight and low cost antenna for installation onboard an airliner across the 43.5 to 47GHz band, a 26.5dBic gain 13 element array of short backfire antennas feeding a mechanically steered flat plate reflector was investigated using the commercially available MOM software FEKO^<TM>. Reasonable agreement was found between FEKO^<TM> and prior work on rectangular waveguide fed single short backfire antennas and an array. A circularly polarised, circular waveguide fed, scalar short backfire antenna was derived from the rectangular waveguide types and used in a 13 element array. The 13 element array was satisfactory in simulation as a stationary feed to a mechanically steered flat plate reflector in that a beam with greater than 26.5dBic could be scanned across more than 98°, thus satisfying the cross-track requirement for the airliner application. This design has the advantage of facility for monopulse tracking compared to a prior mechanically steered lens reflector design.
